We get asked this question quite a bit. And the short answer is it depends! From our experience newborns are best photographed between one and three weeks old. The babies are very easy to get to sleep during this time frame and tiny enough to work with most poses. However we realize that all babies are different and therefore we work on your time schedule and not ours. Regardless of the time frame we do our best to capture every precious moment.
What to Wear
Unless you have a great outfit that fits your baby you don't need to bring them any special outfits. We do encourage special blankets, or books, toys or things that family may have given as gifts. Mom and dad should match in tone -- try to keep things solid and simple. Mom, we realize that you just had a baby and clothing choices maybe be few. We often recommend darker clothing (which is slimming) and that works well for a classic black and white portrait.
Please know that 99% of babies pee and poop in the studio --on the photographer, on mom, dad, the backdrop -- anywhere really and it's okay. This is what babies do and we are prepared. They also spit up. We recommend that you bring a few outfits just for this purpose. We always allow extra time for feeding and changing the baby and also for wardrobe changes!
