Headshots: What To Wear

For headshots you really want to dress according to your brand. What is your profession? Most people want to wear the type of attire that is generally accepted in their industry: for example in the financial industry the dress is mostly conservative business outfits, suits and ties for men and pant suits or dresses for women.

Solid colors work the best for a headshot. Any super bright colors or busy patterns will distract the eye. So for men we recommend white or solid colored shirts if wearing a jacket and tie. If no jacket then we suggest a colored shirt. A white shirt will reflect a lot of light and if you are caucasian it will make you look even paler in skin tone. Also we recommend full length sleeves if not wearing a jacket.

For women we recommend three quarters or full length sleeves; solid neutral colors. Be aware of your neckline with blouses. If it’s too low cut it might look strange if your image gets cropped.

Here is a hint on colors: darker colors and black are slimming while lighter colors add weight.

If you are doing the Basic Headshot we suggest bringing a couple of choices for shirts/blouses. If one of the larger packages bring several different outfits, jackets and ties. Always bring a little more than you think you might wear so you will have choice. Men be sure to bring suit pants if doing a larger session in case you want a three quarter length shot. Bring matching dress shoes in case you want a full length photo. Women: bring heels or appropriate shoes in case you opt for a full length shot.

Understanding color is important. Choose the best colors that flatter you. Chances are if you really love a color it’s because you look great in that color. For more information on choosing the best colors for your skin type go here.
