Getting The Right Look for Your Actor Headshot

This actor’s agent requested the looks of the types he plays —commercial headshots for TV & Film

The Headshot is the single most important marketing tool for an actor

It’s a crucial step to getting in the door. Now there are many ways to do an actor headshot. We will create one that fits in with your market. If your market is in and around Denver and Colorado Springs we’ll go for that look. If you play for a wider market we can assist you there. What’s important is if you have an agent we need to create things that your agent wants you to have. If you do have an agent bring any specifications in so we can know what is needed.

An actor headshot is NOT: a glamor portrait, a corporate headshot or a fashion shot. A great actor headshot will capture the character in one strong image. Your type and style will drive the session, not our vision.

You should probably have both a commercial headshot and a theatrical headshot—each is created differently with wardrobe, color, lighting and environment. Actors need to look trustworthy to sell a product in a commercial headshot; theatrical headshots will show more emotion and depth.

You have literally seconds to make an impression with your headshot-you must instantly communicate your type and personality. If you are coming in for more than a single headshot or update headshot and looking for updated images for your book we can create several looks for you based on what types you normally play. Your headshot should be current and look like you not 10 years younger or with different hair color. We get actors updating every year or two as they develop more and need an updated look.

Your headshot can have poor results with excessive makeup, large jewelry or distracting patterns on clothing. Go for simple—solid low key colors without out crazy patterns or logos—after all it’s your face that the agents and casting directors will be looking at.

Makeup is not necessary for men and women should keep it simple and light or work with a MUA who knows actor headshots makeup. We offer a list of hair and makeup artists here or you can choose your own. Contact us @719.475.0160 or email for more information or you can schedule here.
